A drunk Queensland boat captain who ran aground with more than 100 New Year’s Eve revellers on board has blamed confusion over the alcohol content of his tipple.

Keith Francis Tamati Tarapipipi-Kippenberger was skipper of a cruise boat on the Broadwater at Southport on the Gold Coast on the night of December 31 when it became stuck on a sandbank.

Emergency services including water police were tasked with taking passengers to dry ground.

“We’re getting rescued on new years (sic),” one passenger wrote on social media, accompanied by a video of fireworks.

Tarapipipi-Kippenberger was charged with drink-driving after returning a blood-alcohol reading of 0.149 — almost three times over the legal limit.

He pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

His lawyer told the court Tarapipipi-Kippenberger had been drinking what he thought were “soft drinks” that night.

However, the drinks were actually Hard Solos — an alcoholic variety of the lemon-flavoured carbonated drink Solo.

A can of Hard Solo has an alcohol content level of 1.3 standard drinks, according to product packaging.

Tarapipipi-Kippenberger was fined $2000 and his marine licence was disqualified for three months.

No conviction was recorded.

He is also under investigation by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

He did not comment outside court.
